Many people ask us how much we pay for diamonds. The answer depends on the quality and size of your diamond. The 4Cs of diamond quality are cut, color, clarity, and carat. At Mr. Deals, we want our customers—like you—to know exactly what kind of diamond they are buying or selling when they visit our store.
The first C of diamond quality is cut. Most diamonds have a round cut but there are also other types of cuts like princess cuts and emerald cuts.
Diamond cuts come in different styles like the ones shown above. They also come in different qualities. For example, some round cut diamonds have a better cut quality than others. The GIA has five grades for cuts and here they are listed from worst to best: poor, fair, good, very good, and excellent. You can sell your diamond to us for more cash if the quality of the cut is "Excellent" than you could if its quality was "Poor."
When buying or selling diamonds, the quality of the cut is important because the cut grade affects how well the diamond interacts with light. A good cut has a beautiful sparkle. In the diamond business, we call these qualities brightness, fire, and scintillation.
Diamond color actually refers to its lack of color. When buying and selling diamonds, remember that a colorless diamond commands a higher price than a diamond with more color. Diamond color is also graded on a scale created by the GIA and it ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light) and all of the letters in between.
Sometimes diamonds can have natural colors that are not on the GIA's grading scale. These diamonds are refered to as fancy color diamonds and they generally are worth more (like pink diamonds or blue diamonds).
Diamond clarity is another important factor when it comes to figuring out how much you can sell your diamond for or how much you should spend to buy one. Diamond clarity refers to the imperfections, known as inclusions, that can be seen in diamonds either with the naked eye, 10x magnification, or with a microscope. Some inclusions can be seen with the naked eye but there are also diamonds refered to as "eye clean" which require magnification or a microscope to see the inclusions.
The grades for diamond clarity are as follows (from worst to best): I3, I2, I1, SI2, SI1, VS2, VS1, VVS2, VVS1, IF, and FL. Let’s break down those abbreviations:
Inclusions are observed under 10x magnification.
Diamond carats refer to the weight of the diamond that you are buying or selling. Do not confuse the word 'carat' with the word 'karat' because a karat measures the purity of gold, which we also buy and sell! For diamonds, a metric karat is 200mg. The larger the carat, the more the diamond weighs and the bigger it is.
